Trimbakeshwar Temple is one of the oldest and most respected Shiva temples in India. It is located at the foothills of the Brahmagiri Hills near Nashik, Maharashtra, where the sacred Godavari River is believed to originate. The temple is also one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, making it a highly important pilgrimage site for devotees. According to Hindu mythology, Sage Gautama and his wife Ahalya lived in this region and were known for their kindness and devotion. After a misunderstanding led to the accidental death of a cow, Sage Gautama prayed to Lord Shiva for forgiveness. Pleased with his sincere devotion, Lord Shiva appeared here and requested the holy River Ganga to descend to Earth. The river emerged at Brahmagiri as the Godavari, which is why it is often called the "Ganga of South India."
