Sariska Tiger Reserve is one of Rajasthan's most famous wildlife destinations, located in the Aravalli Hills of Alwar district. Once a royal hunting ground, Sariska was declared a tiger reserve in 1978 under Project Tiger. 📜 History
Sariska Tiger Reserve has a long and interesting history that goes far beyond wildlife. The forests of Sariska were once the royal hunting grounds of the Maharajas of Alwar. During the princely era, the rulers used to visit this forest regularly for hunting expeditions, which was considered a symbol of power and prestige. Even British officers were invited here for hunting. After India became independent, hunting was banned, and efforts were made to protect the rich wildlife of the region. In 1955, the area was declared a wildlife sanctuary. Later, in 1978, Sariska became one of the first reserves to be included under Project Tiger, a nationwide programme started to save India's declining tiger population.
However, Sariska faced a major setback in 2004 when it was discovered that all the tigers in the reserve had disappeared because of illegal poaching. The incident shocked the entire country and highlighted serious gaps in wildlife protection. To restore the tiger population, a unique relocation programme was launched in 2008. Tigers were carefully brought from Ranthambore Tiger Reserve and released into Sariska. It was the first successful tiger relocation project in India. Today, Sariska stands as an example of successful wildlife conservation. The reserve has slowly regained its tiger population and continues to protect many other animals, birds, and forests while reminding visitors about the importance of preserving nature.
