📜 History
The Red Fort is one of the most important historical monuments in India. It was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan after he decided to shift his capital from Agra to Delhi. Construction began in 1638 and was completed in 1648. The fort was designed using red sandstone, which is why it came to be known as the Red Fort. For nearly 200 years, it served as the main residence of the Mughal emperors and became the centre of political and cultural life in the empire. Over the centuries, the fort witnessed many important events. In 1739, Persian ruler Nadir Shah invaded Delhi and looted the fort, taking away priceless treasures, including the famous Peacock Throne. During the Revolt of 1857, the Red Fort became a symbol of India's first major uprising against British rule. After the revolt was crushed, the British captured the fort, removed the last Mughal emperor, Bahadur Shah Zafar, and converted much of the fort into a military camp. The Red Fort gained a new meaning after India became independent in 1947. On 15th August 1947, the first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, hoisted the national flag from the Lahori Gate and addressed the nation. Since then, this tradition has continued every Independence Day. Today, the Red Fort stands as a proud reminder of India's rich history, Mughal architecture, and the country's journey to freedom.
