📜 History
The story of Okhla Bird Sanctuary began much before it became a famous birdwatching destination. In 1874, the British built the Okhla Barrage across the Yamuna River to regulate water for the Agra Canal. Over the years, the slow-moving water created a large wetland, which gradually became a safe home for hundreds of species of birds, fish and aquatic plants. Realising the ecological importance of this wetland, the Uttar Pradesh Government declared it a protected bird sanctuary in 1990 under the Wildlife Protection Act. Since then, the sanctuary has become one of the most important bird habitats in the Delhi-NCR region. Every winter, thousands of migratory birds travel from countries like Siberia, Mongolia and Central Asia to escape the freezing temperatures and spend the season here.
The sanctuary has also witnessed several conservation efforts over the years. Environmental groups and bird lovers have worked together to protect its fragile ecosystem from pollution, illegal encroachment and rapid urban development. Although there have been debates regarding construction projects around the sanctuary, it continues to remain an important refuge for wildlife.
