Perched on the rugged Aravalli Hills overlooking the Pink City of Jaipur, Nahargarh Fort is one of Rajasthan’s most famous historical attractions. Built in 1734 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the fort originally served as a defensive structure to protect Jaipur from invading forces. The name “Nahargarh” means “abode of tigers,” and local legends say the fort was haunted by the spirit of Prince Nahar Singh, after whom it was named. Today, the fort is admired for its majestic architecture, panoramic city views, and rich Rajput history.
The fort combines Rajput and Indo-European architectural styles, featuring grand courtyards, decorative windows, elegant corridors, and beautifully painted interiors. One of its most admired sections is Madhavendra Bhawan, built by Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh for his queens. This palace consists of multiple identical suites connected by passages, showcasing the luxurious lifestyle of Rajasthan’s royal families.

📜 History
Nahargarh Fort was built in 1734 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the ruler who also founded Jaipur city. The fort was constructed mainly to strengthen the defence of the Aravalli Hills and to protect Jaipur from possible attacks. Interestingly, Nahargarh Fort never witnessed any major battle throughout its history. Instead, it served as a safe retreat for the royal family during times of danger. There is an old local legend behind the fort's name. It is believed that the spirit of Nahar Singh Bhomia, a local Rathore prince, disturbed the construction work every night. Workers found that whatever they built during the day was mysteriously damaged by the next morning. To calm the spirit, the king ordered a small temple to be built in Nahar Singh's honour within the fort premises. After this, the construction continued without any unusual incidents. Because of this story, the fort came to be known as Nahargarh, meaning "Abode of Tigers," though many locals also connect the name with Nahar Singh.
During the Indian Revolt of 1857, several British officers and their families were given shelter inside the fort by the Jaipur royal family. Later, in 1868, Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh II expanded the fort. In 1883–1892, Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh II built the beautiful Madhavendra Bhawan, a palace with identical suites for his queens. Today, Nahargarh Fort stands as one of Jaipur's most treasured historical landmarks, admired for its royal history, architecture, and breathtaking views of the Pink City.
