The history of Darjeeling dates back to the British colonial period when it was developed as a summer retreat. Many colonial-era buildings, churches, and schools still add charm to the town. The famous Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, remains one of the region's most iconic attractions.

📜 History
Darjeeling has a rich and interesting history that dates back to the early 19th century. Before the British arrived, this beautiful hill region was part of the Kingdom of Sikkim. In 1835, the Chogyal (King) of Sikkim handed over Darjeeling to the British East India Company so they could develop it as a health resort for British officials escaping the hot summer weather of the plains.
The pleasant climate and breathtaking mountain views soon made Darjeeling one of the most popular hill stations in India. During the British period, roads, schools, churches, and public buildings were constructed, giving the town a unique colonial charm. Around the 1850s, tea plantations were started, and the famous Darjeeling Tea quickly gained worldwide recognition for its rich aroma and delicate flavour. Today, it is considered one of the finest teas in the world.
Another important chapter in Darjeeling's history began in 1881 with the opening of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, popularly known as the Toy Train. This engineering marvel improved transportation and played a major role in the region's development. The railway later became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After India's Independence in 1947, Darjeeling became part of West Bengal. Today, the town proudly preserves its colonial heritage while celebrating the traditions of Nepali, Tibetan, Lepcha, and Bengali communities, making it one of India's most culturally diverse hill destinations.
