📜 History
Kalimpong has a rich and interesting history that reflects the influence of different kingdoms and cultures over the centuries. In the early days, the region was a part of the Kingdom of Sikkim. During the 18th century, it came under the control of Bhutan and remained an important trading area for many years. Because of its location on the ancient trade route connecting India with Tibet, Kalimpong became a busy marketplace where traders exchanged wool, silk, spices, and other valuable goods.
After the Anglo-Bhutan War of 1864–65, the British took control of Kalimpong under the Treaty of Sinchula. Recognising its pleasant climate and strategic location, the British developed the town by building roads, schools, churches, and administrative offices. Christian missionaries also established several educational institutions, many of which are still well known today.
In the early 20th century, Kalimpong gained importance as a centre for Tibetan trade and culture. The town witnessed significant changes after 1959, when many Tibetan refugees arrived following the political unrest in Tibet. They brought with them their traditions, handicrafts, and Buddhist culture, adding a unique cultural identity to the region.
Today, Kalimpong is known not only for its scenic beauty but also for its historical significance. Its heritage can still be seen in its colonial-era buildings, monasteries, old churches, and vibrant multicultural traditions.
