📜 History
The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, earlier known as the Prince of Wales Museum, is one of Mumbai's oldest and most respected museums. The foundation stone was laid in 1905 during the visit of the Prince of Wales, who later became King George V. The museum building was designed by Scottish architect George Wittet in the Indo-Saracenic style, which beautifully combines Indian, Mughal, and British architectural elements. It officially opened its doors to the public in 1922. During the British period, the museum mainly displayed historical objects, rare artworks, and archaeological findings collected from different parts of India. Over the years, it became an important centre for preserving the country's rich cultural heritage. After India's independence, the museum gradually shifted its focus towards showcasing India's own history, traditions, and artistic achievements. In 1998, it was renamed Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya to honour the great Maratha ruler.
One of the lesser-known facts about the museum is that during the First World War, before it opened as a museum, the building was temporarily used as a military hospital for wounded soldiers. Today, the museum houses more than 70,000 artefacts, including ancient sculptures, miniature paintings, coins, textiles, decorative arts, and natural history collections. It remains one of the finest museums in India, attracting historians, researchers, students, and tourists from across the world.
