Chandni Chowk is one of the oldest and most famous marketplaces in Delhi. Its history goes back to the 17th century when Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan shifted his capital from Agra to Shahjahanabad, now known as Old Delhi. Around 1650, his daughter Jahanara Begum designed and developed Chandni Chowk as the main commercial street of the new city. The market got its name from a large water canal that once flowed through its centre. During moonlit nights, the moon's reflection on the water created a sparkling view, which is why it came to be known as "Chandni Chowk," meaning "Moonlight Square." The canal no longer exists, but the name has remained unchanged. During the Mughal period, traders from different parts of India and Central Asia sold silk, spices, jewellery, perfumes, and precious stones here. The market soon became the heart of trade and culture in Delhi. Chandni Chowk also witnessed several important historical events. During the Revolt of 1857, the area became a centre of resistance against British rule and suffered heavy damage after the uprising. In 1911, when the British shifted India's capital from Calcutta to Delhi, Chandni Chowk once again became an important commercial hub. Over the years, despite rapid urban development, the market has managed to preserve its old-world charm. Today, its narrow lanes, centuries-old shops, historic buildings, temples, mosques, and gurudwaras continue to reflect the rich heritage of Delhi.
