📜 History
Yercaud is a peaceful hill station located in the Shevaroy Hills of Tamil Nadu. The name "Yercaud" comes from two Tamil words – Yeri meaning "lake" and Kaadu meaning "forest," which together mean "Lake Forest." Long before it became a tourist destination, the area was home to the Malayali tribal community, who lived by farming and collecting forest produce. During the early 19th century, British officials explored the Shevaroy Hills because of the pleasant climate. Around the 1820s, European settlers began developing the region. The hill station gained importance when Scottish planter M.D. Cockburn introduced coffee cultivation here. Over time, coffee plantations spread across the hills, and Yercaud became one of South India's important coffee-growing regions. The British also planted orange trees, spices, and silver oak, giving the town its green landscape.
Unlike many crowded hill stations, Yercaud remained quiet and less commercialized. During the British period, it served as a summer retreat where officers escaped the heat of the plains. Several old churches, colonial-style bungalows, and schools built during that era still stand today, reflecting its rich heritage. After India's independence, Yercaud gradually developed as a popular tourist destination while preserving its natural beauty. Today, it is known for its cool weather, coffee estates, peaceful atmosphere, and scenic viewpoints. Although modern tourism has grown, Yercaud continues to retain the charm and simplicity that have attracted visitors for nearly two centuries.
