📜 History

Wayanad has a long and interesting history that goes far beyond its beauty as a hill station. The name "Wayanad" is believed to have come from the Malayalam words Vayal Nadu, which mean "the land of paddy fields." For thousands of years, this region has been home to different tribal communities such as the Paniya, Kurichiya, Adiya, and Kuruma, who continue to preserve their unique traditions and culture. Archaeological discoveries at the Edakkal Caves show that people lived in Wayanad during the prehistoric period. The caves contain ancient rock carvings that are believed to be more than 6,000 years old, making them one of the most important historical sites in South India.

During ancient times, Wayanad was ruled by several local dynasties. Later, it became part of the powerful Kingdom of Kottayam. In the 18th century, the region came under the rule of Hyder Ali and later his son Tipu Sultan of Mysore. After Tipu Sultan's defeat in 1792, the British East India Company took control of Wayanad. The British developed roads, introduced tea and coffee plantations, and encouraged farming, which changed the local economy. After India's independence in 1947, Wayanad became part of Kerala. Today, it is known not only for its pleasant climate and green hills but also for its rich tribal heritage, historical landmarks, and peaceful natural surroundings. Its history makes every visit more meaningful for travellers who wish to explore both nature and culture.

A traditional Kerala breakfast, Puttu is made from steamed rice flour and grated coconut. It is served with Kadala Curry, a delicious black chickpea curry cooked with roasted coconut and aromatic spices. The combination is simple, healthy, and filling.
3. Appam with Stew
Appam is a soft, bowl-shaped rice pancake with crispy edges. It is usually served with vegetable, chicken, or mutton stew cooked in creamy coconut milk. This light and comforting dish is popular among both locals and tourists.
4. Bamboo Rice Payasam
