📜 History
Valparai has a rich history that dates back to the late 19th century. Before it became a famous hill station, the region was covered with thick forests and was home to indigenous tribal communities such as the Malasar and Kadar people. These tribes lived close to nature and depended on the forests for their livelihood. During British rule, the scenic hills of Valparai attracted plantation owners because of the cool climate and fertile land. Around the 1890s, large areas of forest were cleared to establish tea and coffee plantations. Roads were built through the mountains to transport plantation products, and many workers from different parts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala came here for employment. Over time, Valparai developed into one of South India's important tea-producing regions. The area has also witnessed several incidents involving wildlife, especially elephants and leopards, as plantations expanded into forest land. Even today, people driving through the Valparai Ghat Road often stop for herds of wild elephants crossing the road. Conservation efforts in recent years have focused on protecting both wildlife and the livelihoods of local communities. Today, Valparai is known not only for its endless tea estates and pleasant weather but also for its unique history, where nature, tribal culture, British-era plantations, and wildlife continue to exist side by side.
