Thiruvananthapuram Zoo is one of the oldest and most respected zoological parks in India. Its story began in 1859 during the rule of the Maharaja of Travancore. Before the zoo came into existence, a museum had already been opened in 1857. However, the museum alone did not attract many visitors. To make the place more interesting for the public, the Travancore royal family decided to establish a zoo and a public garden beside it.
