Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve is the largest and oldest tiger reserve in Maharashtra. 📜 History
Tadoba National Park has a history that goes back many decades. The forest was first declared as Tadoba National Park in 1955 to protect the rich wildlife found in this region of Maharashtra. Later, in 1986, the nearby Andhari Wildlife Sanctuary was created. In 1995, both protected areas were combined to form the Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve, which is now one of India's most successful tiger conservation areas. The name "Tadoba" comes from the local tribal deity Taru, also known as Tadoba. According to an old Gond tribal legend, Taru was a brave village chief who lost his life while fighting a tiger. The local people believed he became a protector of the forest, and a small temple dedicated to him still stands near Tadoba Lake.
Over the years, the reserve has played an important role in saving the Bengal tiger. At one time, tiger numbers had fallen because of hunting and habitat loss. With better forest protection, anti-poaching measures, and conservation efforts under Project Tiger, the population gradually recovered. Today, Tadoba is famous across India for its healthy tiger population and successful wildlife management. The reserve has also witnessed several forest fires and challenges like illegal hunting in the past, but continuous efforts by the Forest Department and local communities have helped preserve this valuable ecosystem for future generations.
