📜 History
Shillong Peak is the highest point in Meghalaya and has always held great importance for the local Khasi people. Long before it became a tourist attraction, the peak was considered a sacred place. According to Khasi folklore, the guardian deity known as "Lei Shyllong" is believed to have protected the surrounding region from this hill. In fact, many historians believe that the city of Shillong got its name from this local deity. During the British colonial period, Shillong was developed as the summer capital of Assam because of its cool climate and beautiful surroundings. British officers often visited Shillong Peak to enjoy the panoramic view of the hills and valleys. As the city expanded over the years, the peak became one of the most visited viewpoints in Northeast India.
Another important chapter in its history came after India's independence when the Indian Air Force established a radar station near the summit due to its strategic location. Even today, a part of Shillong Peak remains under the control of the Indian Air Force. Visitors are allowed to enter after a routine security check. Although modern facilities have been added for tourists, the place has never lost its cultural and religious significance for the Khasi community. Today, Shillong Peak stands as a perfect blend of history, local beliefs, natural beauty, and national importance, attracting thousands of visitors every year.
