📜 History
Cherrapunji, now officially known as Sohra, is one of the oldest settlements in the Khasi Hills of Meghalaya. Long before the arrival of the British, this region was home to the Khasi tribes, who followed their own traditions, customs, and village administration. Sohra was an important trading centre where people exchanged limestone, oranges, bay leaves, and other forest products with neighbouring areas. During the British period in the 19th century, Sohra gained importance because of its pleasant climate and strategic location. In 1835, the British made Cherrapunji the headquarters of their administration in the Khasi and Jaintia Hills. However, due to heavy rainfall, frequent landslides, and transportation difficulties, the headquarters was later shifted to Shillong in 1866.
Cherrapunji also played an important role in the spread of education and Christianity in Meghalaya. Welsh Christian missionaries arrived here in the 1840s and established schools and churches. They also developed the Khasi script using the Roman alphabet, which is still used today. For many years, Cherrapunji was known as the wettest place on Earth because of its record-breaking rainfall. Although Mawsynram later received that title, Sohra continues to be one of the rainiest places in the world. Today, it is not only famous for its natural beauty but also for its rich history, unique Khasi culture, and the remarkable way local communities have adapted to life amidst constant rain.
