Saputara

Saputara is a beautiful hill station located in the Dang district of Gujarat, near the Maharashtra border. Nestled in the Sahyadri (Western Ghats) range, it is known for its pleasant climate, lush green forests, waterfalls, scenic valleys, and tribal culture. The name "Saputara" means "Abode of Serpents." It is Gujarat's only hill station and attracts tourists throughout the year for nature walks, boating, ropeway rides, trekking, and breathtaking sunrise and sunset views. The destination offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, adventure, and cultural experiences for families, couples, and nature lovers.

Saputara is Gujarat's most famous hill station, situated at an elevation of approximately 1,000 meters above sea level in the Western Ghats. Surrounded by dense forests, rolling hills, and deep valleys, Saputara serves as a refreshing escape from the heat of the plains. The hill station is especially popular during the monsoon season when the surrounding landscape turns lush green and numerous waterfalls come alive.

One of the major attractions of Saputara is its picturesque lake, where visitors can enjoy boating while admiring the scenic surroundings. The Saputara Ropeway offers panoramic views of the valleys and hills, making it one of the most exciting experiences in the town. Sunset Point and Sunrise Point provide spectacular views and are among the most visited locations by photographers and nature enthusiasts. The region is rich in tribal heritage, particularly the culture of the Dang tribe. Visitors can explore the Artist Village to witness traditional tribal art, handicrafts, bamboo work, and local cultural performances. Attractions such as Step Garden, Rose Garden, Lake Garden, and Saputara Tribal Museum further enhance the tourism experience.

Adventure seekers can enjoy trekking, hiking, nature trails, cycling, and camping in the surrounding hills. Nearby attractions like Gira Waterfalls, Waghai Botanical Garden, and Vansda National Park offer additional opportunities for exploration.

The pleasant climate throughout the year, combined with excellent viewpoints, cultural attractions, and family-friendly activities, makes Saputara one of the most attractive weekend destinations in western India. Whether seeking relaxation, adventure, photography, or cultural experiences, Saputara provides a memorable travel experience for visitors of all ages.

📜 History

Saputara is the only hill station in Gujarat and has a history that is closely connected with the local tribal communities. The name "Saputara" means "Abode of Snakes." It comes from the words Sapu (snake) and Utara (home or residence). For centuries, this region has been home to tribal groups such as the Dangs, who worship snakes as a symbol of nature and protection. Even today, many local traditions and festivals reflect this deep cultural belief.
Before becoming a popular tourist destination, Saputara was covered with thick forests and was mainly inhabited by tribal families who depended on farming, forest produce, and traditional crafts for their livelihood. During the British period, the surrounding Dang forests attracted attention because of their rich natural resources, but Saputara itself remained peaceful and untouched.

After Gujarat was formed in 1960, the state government identified Saputara as a suitable hill station and started developing roads, gardens, viewpoints, and tourist facilities. Over the years, it gradually became one of the most visited weekend destinations in western India.
Today, Saputara is known not only for its pleasant climate and beautiful landscapes but also for preserving the culture and traditions of the tribal people. Its history is a perfect blend of nature, heritage, and tribal life, making it a unique destination for visitors of all ages.

2. Bhajiya
Hot and crispy bhajiyas are a favourite evening snack, especially during the monsoon. They are prepared using gram flour and vegetables like onion, potato, or chilli, and are best enjoyed with green chutney and a cup of tea.
3. Corn on the Cob (Bhutta)
Fresh roasted corn is sold at many viewpoints around Saputara. It is roasted over charcoal and seasoned with lemon, salt, and chilli powder, making it a simple yet delicious snack.
4. Tribal Bamboo Chicken
