Ramanathaswamy Temple is one of the holiest Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva and is part of the sacred Char Dham pilgrimage. 📜 History
Rameswaram Temple is one of the oldest and most respected temples in India. According to Hindu beliefs, Lord Rama built a Shiva Lingam here after defeating Ravana in Lanka. Since Ravana was a great devotee of Lord Shiva, Rama wanted to seek forgiveness for the sin of killing him. He worshipped Lord Shiva at this place, and the Lingam installed here is known as Ramanathaswamy. While the temple's religious roots come from the Ramayana, the present structure was built over many centuries. The earliest parts of the temple date back to the 12th century during the rule of the Pandya kings. Later, several rulers, especially the Sethupathi kings of Ramanathapuram, expanded the temple by adding grand halls, massive towers, and the world-famous long corridors. Much of the construction seen today was completed between the 12th and 17th centuries.
One of the most remarkable features of the temple is its corridor, which is considered the longest among all Hindu temples in the world.
