The history of Pushkar Lake is deeply connected with faith, mythology, and centuries of tradition. According to Hindu beliefs, the lake was formed when Lord Brahma dropped a lotus flower (Pushpa) on the earth while searching for a suitable place to perform a sacred yajna (ritual). The petals of the flower fell at three different locations, and water sprang out from those spots. The main lake that emerged became known as Pushkar Lake. This is why the place is considered one of the holiest pilgrimage sites for Hindus. Historical records suggest that Pushkar has been an important religious centre for more than 2,000 years. Several ancient inscriptions found in the area indicate that many rulers, including the Rajputs, Chauhans, Mughals, and Marathas, contributed to the construction and renovation of the lake's ghats and temples. Over time, around 52 bathing ghats were built around the lake, where pilgrims gather to take a holy dip, especially during the Kartik Purnima festival. Pushkar Lake has also witnessed many historical events. During the Mughal period, Emperor Aurangzeb is believed to have ordered the destruction of several temples in the region, though many were later rebuilt by Rajput kings and local devotees.
