📜 History
Orchha is a historic town in Madhya Pradesh that was founded in 1531 AD by Bundela Rajput ruler Raja Rudra Pratap Singh. He selected this place on the banks of the Betwa River because it was naturally protected by dense forests and flowing water, making it an ideal location for a new capital. Over the years, Orchha grew into an important political and cultural centre of the Bundela dynasty. One of the most respected rulers of Orchha was Raja Veer Singh Deo, who ruled during the early 17th century. He built several magnificent palaces, temples, and forts that still stand today. His close friendship with Mughal Prince Salim, who later became Emperor Jahangir, led to the construction of the famous Jahangir Mahal to welcome the emperor during his visit to Orchha.
Unlike many other kingdoms, Orchha managed to preserve much of its heritage despite facing several political changes. In the 18th century, the Bundela rulers shifted their capital to Tikamgarh, after which Orchha gradually lost its political importance. However, its beautiful architecture, royal cenotaphs, temples, and palaces remained untouched by time. Today, Orchha is known as one of India's finest heritage destinations. Walking through its narrow streets, ancient forts, and riverside monuments gives visitors a glimpse into the glorious past of the Bundela rulers and their rich cultural legacy.
