Nandi Hills is a scenic hill station located about 60 km from Bengaluru in Karnataka. Situated at an altitude of around 1,478 meters above sea level, it is famous for its pleasant climate, breathtaking sunrise views, lush greenery, and historical significance. Once used as a summer retreat by rulers, the hill attracts nature lovers, photographers, cyclists, and adventure enthusiasts. Its winding roads, ancient temples, viewpoints, and peaceful surroundings make it one of the most popular weekend destinations near Bengaluru.
The hill derives its name from the ancient Nandi Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva's sacred bull, Nandi. Historical records suggest that the area gained prominence during the reign of various South Indian dynasties and later became a favored summer retreat for Tipu Sultan. Several structures associated with the region's rich past can still be explored by visitors today.
One of the biggest attractions of Nandi Hills is its breathtaking sunrise. During the early morning hours, thick clouds often cover the valleys below, creating a magical appearance that resembles a sea of clouds. This spectacular phenomenon attracts photographers and tourists from across the country. The winding roads leading to the summit are equally attractive, making the journey itself an enjoyable experience.

📜 History
Nandi Hills History
Nandi Hills has a long and interesting history that goes back more than a thousand years. In the early days, the hill was known as Anandagiri, which means "Hill of Happiness." It later came under the rule of different South Indian dynasties, including the Ganga, Chola, and Hoysala kingdoms. Because of its high location, the hill was considered an important place for keeping watch over the surrounding region. During the 16th century, Tipu Sultan and his father Hyder Ali recognised the strategic value of Nandi Hills. They strengthened the old fort by building strong stone walls and defensive structures. The fort served as a military outpost and a safe retreat during times of war. One of the famous spots here is Tipu's Drop, a steep cliff that is believed to have been used to push criminals or prisoners to their death. Although many stories are linked to this place, historians still debate how often it was actually used.
After the fall of Tipu Sultan in 1799, the British took control of Nandi Hills. They were impressed by its pleasant climate and turned it into a popular summer retreat. Several British officials built holiday bungalows here to escape the heat of Bengaluru. Today, Nandi Hills is remembered not only for its beautiful sunrise views but also for its rich historical background, ancient fort walls, old temples, and the stories that continue to attract history lovers from across India.
