Nakki Lake

Nakki Lake is a beautiful artificial lake located in the heart of Mount Abu, the only hill station of Rajasthan. Surrounded by scenic hills, unique rock formations, and lush greenery, it is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the region. The lake is famous for boating, sunset views, and local legends. According to folklore, gods dug the lake using their nails ("nakh"), which inspired its name. It offers a peaceful retreat for families, couples, and nature lovers.

Nakki Lake is the centerpiece of Mount Abu and one of Rajasthan's most cherished tourist attractions. Nestled amidst the Aravalli Hills at an elevation of approximately 1,200 meters above sea level, the lake provides a refreshing contrast to the desert landscapes commonly associated with Rajasthan. Its serene waters, surrounded by green hills and unusual rock formations, create a picturesque setting that attracts thousands of visitors every year.

The lake covers a significant area and serves as a popular recreational spot for tourists. Boating is the main attraction, allowing visitors to enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding hills while gliding across the calm waters. Paddle boats and rowing boats are available, making the experience enjoyable for families, couples, and groups of friends.
One of the most intriguing aspects of Nakki Lake is its legendary origin. Local folklore states that gods excavated the lake using their fingernails, known as "nakh" in Hindi, giving rise to the name Nakki Lake. This legend adds a mystical charm to the destination and remains an important part of local culture.

The area around the lake is equally attractive. Famous landmarks such as Toad Rock, Sunset Point, and Gandhi Ghat are located nearby. Walking along the lakeside promenade offers beautiful views and opportunities to enjoy local snacks, handicrafts, and souvenirs sold in nearby markets.

The best time to visit Nakki Lake is between October and March when the weather is cool and pleasant. During this period, visitors can comfortably explore the lake and surrounding attractions. Whether seeking relaxation, natural beauty, photography opportunities, or a romantic outing, Nakki Lake provides a memorable experience and remains one of the highlights of any trip to Mount Abu.

📜 History

Nakki Lake is one of the oldest and most famous attractions in Mount Abu, Rajasthan. According to local belief, the lake was not built by humans but was dug out by gods using only their nails. The word "Nakki" comes from the Hindi word Nakh, which means "nail." Because of this unique legend, the lake is considered sacred by many local people. Another popular story is connected with a brave man named Rasia Balam. It is said that a local king promised his daughter's hand in marriage to anyone who could dig a lake overnight using only their fingernails. Rasia Balam almost completed the impossible task, but due to a misunderstanding and betrayal, he could not finish it. His story is still remembered by the people of Mount Abu and has become an important part of the region's folklore. During the British period, Nakki Lake became a favourite picnic and relaxation spot for British officers who visited Mount Abu, which served as the summer headquarters of the Rajputana Agency. The peaceful surroundings and pleasant climate made it a popular retreat. Over the years, Nakki Lake has remained the heart of Mount Abu. While modern boating facilities and gardens have been added, the lake still carries the charm of its ancient legends and historical significance. Even today, visitors come here not only to enjoy its beauty but also to hear the fascinating stories that have been passed down through generations.
