📜 History
Lake Pichola is one of the oldest and most beautiful lakes in Udaipur, Rajasthan. It was built in the year 1362 AD by a Banjara tribesman named Pichhu Banjara during the reign of Maharana Lakha. The lake was originally created to store rainwater and meet the water needs of the nearby villages. Later, Maharana Udai Singh II was impressed by its beauty and decided to establish the city of Udaipur on its banks in 1559. This decision changed the history of the region forever. Over the years, several Maharanas expanded the lake by building stone embankments, ghats, palaces, and islands. Famous structures like Jag Mandir and the Lake Palace were constructed in the middle of the lake, making it one of the most unique royal lakes in India.
Lake Pichola has also witnessed many important historical events. One of the most famous incidents took place during the time of Maharana Pratap. Before the Battle of Haldighati, many important meetings and military discussions were held around the royal palaces near the lake. Later, Jag Mandir became famous for providing shelter to Prince Khurram, who later became Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, when he rebelled against his father Emperor Jahangir. It is believed that the beauty of Jag Mandir inspired some of the architectural ideas later seen in the Taj Mahal. Today, Lake Pichola stands as a symbol of Udaipur's royal heritage and continues to attract visitors from across the world.
