📜 History

Khandala has a history that goes back several centuries, although it became widely known during the British period. Located in the scenic Sahyadri Hills, the region was once part of the territories ruled by the Marathas. Because of its position on the old trade route connecting the Deccan Plateau with the Konkan coast, the area was important for traders and travelers. Merchants carrying goods between inland Maharashtra and coastal ports often crossed these mountain passes. In the 19th century, after the British gained control over the region, Khandala started developing as a hill station. The pleasant climate, lush greenery, and cool weather made it an ideal escape from the heat of cities like Mumbai and Pune. British officers and wealthy families began visiting Khandala during the summer months. The construction of the Mumbai–Pune railway line through the Bhor Ghat section in the 1860s played a major role in improving access to the hill station. This engineering project was considered one of the most challenging railway constructions of its time. Over the years, Khandala gradually transformed from a quiet mountain pass into a popular tourist destination. Unlike many commercial hill stations, it has managed to retain much of its natural beauty. Today, Khandala is known not only for its scenic valleys and waterfalls but also for its historical connection to the old trade routes and the remarkable railway engineering achievements of the British era.
