📜 History
The Kashi Vishwanath Temple is one of the oldest and most respected Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is located in the holy city of Varanasi, which is believed to be one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities. According to Hindu beliefs, Lord Shiva himself chose Kashi as his permanent home, making this temple one of the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas in India. The temple has witnessed many ups and downs over the centuries. Historical records suggest that the original temple was destroyed and rebuilt several times during different periods. In 1194 CE, it was damaged during the invasion of Muhammad Ghori's army. Later, many Hindu rulers rebuilt the shrine, but it again faced destruction during the rule of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in 1669. He ordered the demolition of the temple and built the Gyanvapi Mosque at the site.
The present temple was constructed in 1780 by Queen Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore, whose contribution is remembered with great respect even today. Later, Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the ruler of Punjab, donated nearly one tonne of gold to cover the temple's domes, giving it the famous golden appearance seen today. Despite facing repeated destruction, the faith of devotees never faded. Every reconstruction became a symbol of devotion and resilience. Today, the Kashi Vishwanath Temple stands as a powerful spiritual landmark, attracting millions of pilgrims and visitors from across India and around the world.
