📜 History
Hampi is one of India's most remarkable historical destinations, known for being the capital of the powerful Vijayanagara Empire. The city was established in the 14th century by Harihara I and Bukka Raya I, the founders of the empire. Under the rule of great kings like Krishnadevaraya, Hampi became one of the richest and most advanced cities in the world. Traders from Persia, Portugal, and other countries visited Hampi to buy diamonds, spices, silk, and precious stones. The city's grand temples, markets, palaces, and water management systems reflected its wealth and excellent planning.
However, Hampi's glorious days came to a tragic end in 1565 after the Battle of Talikota. The combined armies of the Deccan Sultanates defeated the Vijayanagara Empire. After the battle, Hampi was looted and destroyed over several months. Magnificent buildings, royal palaces, and marketplaces were reduced to ruins, and the once-thriving capital was abandoned. Although the empire continued for a short period from other locations, Hampi never regained its former glory. Today, the ruins of Hampi stand as a reminder of one of the greatest kingdoms in Indian history. The stone temples, giant sculptures, ancient streets, and royal structures continue to tell stories of a city that was once admired across the world. In 1986, UNESCO recognized Hampi as a World Heritage Site, helping preserve its rich cultural and historical legacy for future generations.
