📜 History
Coorg, officially known as Kodagu, has a long and interesting history that goes back many centuries. In ancient times, the region was ruled by the Gangas, Cholas, Hoysalas, and later the Vijayanagara Empire. After the fall of the Vijayanagara rulers, Kodagu came under the control of local chieftains known as the Haleri dynasty during the 17th century. One of the most well-known rulers was Dodda Veerarajendra, who strengthened the kingdom and defended it from invasions. However, after internal disputes, the British East India Company took control of Coorg in 1834 after the Coorg War. The last ruler, Chikka Veerarajendra, was removed from power and sent into exile.
Under British rule, Coorg became famous for coffee plantations. The cool climate and fertile hills attracted British planters, who introduced large-scale coffee cultivation. Even today, coffee remains the backbone of Coorg's economy. After India gained independence in 1947, Coorg became a separate state. Later, in 1956, under the States Reorganisation Act, it was merged with Karnataka. Apart from its political history, Coorg is also known for the brave Kodava community. Many soldiers from this region have served in the Indian Armed Forces with great pride. Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa and General K.S. Thimayya, two of India's most respected military leaders, belonged to Coorg. Today, the district is admired not only for its natural beauty but also for its rich history, culture, and patriotic spirit.
