Overall, Abbey Falls is a perfect blend of adventure, nature, and tranquility. It is an essential stop for anyone visiting Coorg, offering unforgettable views and a deep connection with the natural beauty of Karnataka.
📜 History
Abbey Falls, located near Madikeri in Karnataka's Kodagu district, has a history closely connected with the region's coffee plantations. During the British period, the surrounding area was covered with thick forests. As coffee cultivation expanded in the 19th century, large parts of these forests were cleared and converted into plantations. The waterfall, which was originally known as Jessie Falls, was named after the daughter of a British officer who owned land in the area. After India gained independence, the ownership of many plantations changed, and over time the waterfall became one of the most visited tourist attractions in Coorg. To make the place safer for visitors, the Karnataka Forest Department built a hanging bridge opposite the falls, allowing people to enjoy the scenic view without entering the dangerous water.
Although Abbey Falls is known mainly for its beauty, it has also witnessed several unfortunate incidents. During the monsoon season, the water flow becomes extremely strong, and a few visitors have lost their lives after ignoring warning signs and attempting to enter the river or take selfies near slippery rocks. Because of these accidents, authorities have installed safety barricades and restricted access to the base of the waterfall. Today, Abbey Falls is not only admired for its natural beauty but also serves as a reminder that nature should always be enjoyed with care and respect.
