About Chilika Lake

Chilika Lake is Asia’s largest brackish water lagoon, stretching along the east coast of India in Odisha. It is a unique ecosystem where freshwater from rivers and saltwater from the Bay of Bengal mix, creating rich biodiversity. The lake is famous for its scenic beauty, migratory birds, and rare Irrawaddy dolphins.

Chilika is not just a lake but a living landscape with islands, fishing villages, and vast shallow waters that change color with the seasons. The most famous island inside the lake is Nalabana Bird Sanctuary, which becomes a paradise for birdwatchers during winter when thousands of migratory birds arrive from Siberia, Iran, and Central Asia.

The lake supports the livelihood of more than 150,000 fishermen, making it both an ecological and cultural treasure. Its waters are rich in prawns, crabs, and fish, and traditional fishing practices are still widely followed.
One of the most magical experiences at Chilika is spotting Irrawaddy dolphins near Satapada, where boat rides take visitors into calm blue waters. The sunrise and sunset views over the lake are breathtaking, with golden reflections stretching across the horizon.

Chilika is also an important conservation site recognized under the Ramsar Convention, highlighting its global ecological importance. Whether you are a nature lover, photographer, or peace seeker, Chilika offers a perfect blend of wildlife, scenery, and culture.
