📜 History
The history of Chikmagalur goes back several centuries and is closely connected with the powerful Hoysala rulers who governed this region during the 11th and 12th centuries. The name "Chikmagalur" comes from the Kannada words Chikka meaning "younger" and Magaluru meaning "daughter's town." According to local tradition, the area was gifted as a dowry to the younger daughter of a local chieftain, and this is how the town got its unique name. During the British period, Chikmagalur gained importance because of coffee cultivation. In the 17th century, the famous Sufi saint Baba Budan is believed to have brought seven coffee beans from Yemen and secretly planted them on the hills now known as Baba Budangiri. This simple act changed the future of the region. Over time, the British developed large coffee estates, making Chikmagalur one of India's leading coffee-producing regions. Apart from coffee, the region has also been known for its dense forests, wildlife, and ancient temples. Many old trade routes once passed through these hills, connecting the Malnad region with the coastal areas of Karnataka. Even today, visitors can see the influence of history in its old plantations, colonial-era bungalows, and centuries-old temples. Chikmagalur has successfully preserved its natural beauty while keeping its rich cultural and historical heritage alive.
