📜 History
Bhandardara is one of the oldest and most peaceful hill destinations in Maharashtra. Long before it became a popular tourist spot, this region was home to tribal communities such as the Mahadev Koli and Thakar people, who lived in harmony with the forests, rivers, and hills. They depended mainly on farming, fishing, and forest produce for their livelihood. The history of Bhandardara is closely connected with the construction of the Wilson Dam across the Pravara River. The dam was built in 1910 during British rule and is considered one of the oldest masonry dams in India. It was named after Sir Leslie Wilson, the Governor of Bombay Presidency. The reservoir created by the dam, known as Arthur Lake, transformed the area by providing water for irrigation and supporting agriculture in nearby villages.
Bhandardara is also linked to ancient Indian mythology. The famous Amruteshwar Temple, located at Ratanwadi near the lake, is believed to be over 1,200 years old and is an excellent example of Hemadpanti-style architecture. According to local beliefs, the Pravara River originated after Sage Agastya received the divine nectar (Amrit), giving the region great religious significance.
Over the years, Bhandardara has remained untouched by heavy urban development. Even today, it is known for its natural beauty, waterfalls, trekking routes, and peaceful atmosphere, making it one of Maharashtra's favourite weekend destinations.
