📜 History
Thibaw Palace, located in Ratnagiri, Maharashtra, has an interesting connection with the last king of Burma (now Myanmar), King Thibaw Min. After the British defeated the Burmese kingdom in 1885 during the Third Anglo-Burmese War, King Thibaw Min, along with his wife Queen Supayalat and their daughters, was removed from his country and brought to India. Instead of being kept in prison, the British built a palace for the royal family in Ratnagiri, where they lived in exile for nearly three decades. Construction of the palace was completed around 1910. Although it was not as grand as the royal palaces of Burma, it provided a peaceful residence for the exiled king. During his stay, King Thibaw lived a quiet life away from politics and rarely interacted with the outside world. Despite being far from his homeland, he continued to follow Burmese traditions and customs within the palace.
King Thibaw Min passed away in Ratnagiri in 1916 and was buried nearby. His tomb remains an important historical site visited by people from both India and Myanmar. After India's independence, the palace was taken over by the government and later converted into a museum. Today, visitors can see photographs, personal belongings, documents, and paintings related to the royal family.
