Thekkady is a picturesque hill destination situated in the Idukki district of Kerala, India. Nestled amidst the majestic Western Ghats, it is best known as the gateway to the renowned Periyar National Park, one of India's most celebrated wildlife reserves. The region is blessed with dense evergreen forests, rolling hills, spice plantations, and abundant wildlife, making it a paradise for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers.

The main attraction of Thekkady is Periyar Lake, an artificial lake formed by the Mullaperiyar Dam. Visitors can enjoy boat cruises on the lake while spotting elephants, deer, wild boars, and numerous bird species along the shoreline. The reserve is also home to tigers, leopards, Indian bison (gaur), and several rare species of flora and fauna.Apart from wildlife tourism, Thekkady is famous for its spice plantations producing cardamom, pepper, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg. Guided plantation tours offer insights into Kerala's spice cultivation traditions. Adventure lovers can participate in bamboo rafting, jungle trekking, nature walks, jeep safaris, and border hiking programs organized by forest authorities.

Thekkady also showcases Kerala's rich cultural heritage through traditional Kathakali performances and Kalaripayattu martial art demonstrations. The pleasant climate throughout the year enhances its appeal as a family vacation destination.

Surrounded by breathtaking landscapes and rich biodiversity, Thekkady offers a unique opportunity to experience nature, wildlife, adventure, and culture in one destination. 📜 History

Thekkady has a rich history that is closely connected with the forests and wildlife of Kerala. In earlier times, this entire region was covered with thick evergreen forests and was home to many wild animals. Local tribal communities like the Mannan and Paliyan lived here for centuries and depended on the forest for their daily needs. They knew the forests well and lived in harmony with nature. A major turning point in Thekkady's history came in the late 19th century when the Mullaperiyar Dam was constructed across the Periyar River in 1895. The dam was built during British rule mainly to supply water for farming in the neighbouring areas of Tamil Nadu. As the reservoir filled up, a large part of the forest got submerged, creating the beautiful Periyar Lake. Even today, the dried tree trunks standing inside the lake remind visitors of the forests that once existed there. To protect the region's rich wildlife, the area was declared the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary in 1950. Later, in 1978, it became the Periyar Tiger Reserve under Project Tiger. Today, Thekkady is one of India's most famous wildlife destinations. It attracts visitors from across the country and abroad who come to enjoy boat rides, nature walks, and wildlife sightings while experiencing the peaceful beauty of the Western Ghats.
