📜 History
Shani Shingnapur is a small village in Ahilyanagar (formerly Ahmednagar) district of Maharashtra, but its history has made it one of the most respected pilgrimage destinations in India. According to local belief, several centuries ago, after heavy rainfall and flooding, a large black stone was found on the banks of the Panasnala stream by a group of shepherds. When one of them touched the stone with a pointed stick, it is said that blood started flowing from it. That night, Lord Shani appeared in the dream of a villager and revealed that the stone was His self-manifested form (Swayambhu). Lord Shani instructed the villagers not to build a roof or temple over the stone. Instead, He wished to remain under the open sky so that everyone could offer prayers freely. Even today, the sacred black stone stands on an open platform without any roof, making the shrine unique among temples dedicated to Lord Shani.
Shani Shingnapur also became famous because of the long-standing tradition that many houses in the village did not have doors or locks.
