📜 History
The history of Sam Sand Dunes is closely connected with the ancient desert culture of western Rajasthan. Located around 40 km from Jaisalmer, these golden sand dunes have been part of the vast Thar Desert for centuries. In earlier times, this region was not a tourist destination but an important route for traders travelling between India, Central Asia, and nearby desert kingdoms. Camel caravans carrying silk, spices, dry fruits, and handicrafts often crossed these sandy landscapes on their way to Jaisalmer, which was once a prosperous trading centre. The people living near Sam Sand Dunes belonged mainly to Rajput and local desert communities. They adapted their lifestyle according to the harsh climate, depending on camel rearing, livestock, and traditional crafts for their livelihood. Even today, many families continue to preserve their folk traditions, music, dance, and colourful culture.
During the Indo-Pak wars of 1965 and 1971, the desert region around Jaisalmer gained strategic importance because of its location near the international border. Although no major battle took place directly at Sam Sand Dunes, military movement in the surrounding desert increased, and the area became more significant from a security point of view. Tourism at Sam Sand Dunes began growing rapidly in the 1980s and 1990s. Camel safaris, jeep rides, cultural performances, and desert camping attracted visitors from across India and abroad. Today, Sam Sand Dunes is one of Rajasthan's most famous desert destinations, where travellers experience both the natural beauty of the Thar Desert and the rich heritage of local Rajasthani culture.
