📜 History
Nainital has a long and interesting history that is closely connected with local beliefs as well as the British period. According to Hindu tradition, the place is considered sacred because it is believed that the eye (Nain) of Goddess Sati fell here after the incident involving Lord Shiva carrying her body. Because of this belief, the lake came to be known as Naini Lake, and the temple built near it was dedicated to Goddess Naina Devi. For many centuries, the area remained a peaceful region surrounded by dense forests and was mainly inhabited by the Kumaoni people. It was not widely known outside the hills until the British officer P. Barron discovered the lake in 1839 while on a hunting trip. Impressed by its natural beauty and pleasant weather, he wrote about the place and encouraged the British administration to develop it as a hill station.
During the British rule, Nainital soon became one of the most important summer destinations in North India. Government offices, schools, churches, and beautiful colonial buildings were established here. It also served as the summer headquarters of the United Provinces administration. Over the years, Nainital has faced several natural disasters. The most tragic was the massive landslide of 1880, which destroyed many buildings and claimed numerous lives. After this incident, better planning and safety measures were introduced. Today, Nainital proudly preserves its historical charm while remaining one of Uttarakhand's most loved hill stations.
