📜 History

Manali has a long and interesting history that is closely connected with ancient Indian traditions and the culture of the Himalayan region. According to Hindu mythology, it is believed that Sage Manu reached this valley after the great flood and started a new chapter of human civilization here. Because of this belief, the place came to be known as "Manu-Alaya," which means the abode of Manu. Over time, the name gradually changed to Manali. Historically, Manali was an important stop on the old trade route that connected India with Ladakh and Tibet. Traders carrying wool, salt, spices, and other valuable goods passed through this region, making the valley an active center for trade and cultural exchange. The local people mainly belonged to different tribal communities and depended on farming, animal husbandry, and trade for their livelihood.

During the British period, Manali gained popularity because of its pleasant climate and beautiful surroundings. British officers often visited the area during the summer months, and they introduced apple cultivation, which later became one of the major sources of income for local families. After India's independence, better roads and tourism facilities helped Manali develop into one of the country's most visited hill stations. Today, while Manali has become a modern tourist destination, it still preserves its old temples, traditional wooden houses, local customs, and rich cultural heritage, giving visitors a glimpse of its fascinating past.
