📜 History
Majuli, located in the Brahmaputra River in Assam, has a history that is closely connected with Assamese culture and the Vaishnavite movement. Around the 16th century, the great saint and social reformer Srimanta Sankardeva visited this island and spread the teachings of Neo-Vaishnavism. He established several Satras (Vaishnavite monasteries), which became centres of religion, education, art, dance, music and literature. Even today, these Satras continue to preserve Assam's rich cultural traditions.
Long ago, Majuli was part of the mainland, but after a series of powerful floods and earthquakes during the 17th century, the course of the Brahmaputra River changed, turning the area into a separate river island. Over the centuries, Majuli became home to different tribal communities such as the Mishing, Deori and Sonowal Kachari, who have lived together while protecting their unique customs and traditions.
Apart from its religious importance, Majuli has always been known for its handmade masks, pottery, traditional dance forms and colourful festivals. The famous Raas Mahotsav, celebrated every year, attracts visitors from across India and showcases stories from the life of Lord Krishna through music, drama and dance. Recognising its cultural and historical significance, Majuli was declared India's first island district in 2016. Today, it is regarded as one of Assam's most treasured heritage destinations.

1. Fish Tenga
