📜 History
Kodaikanal has a rich history that goes back many centuries. Long before it became a popular hill station, the area was home to the Paliyan tribes, one of the oldest tribal communities in South India. These indigenous people lived peacefully in the forests and depended on nature for their livelihood. During the early 19th century, British officials and Christian missionaries started visiting the Palani Hills to escape the hot weather of the plains. They were impressed by the cool climate, green valleys, and peaceful surroundings. Around the 1840s, the British began developing Kodaikanal as a summer retreat. Roads, churches, schools, and cottages were gradually built, making the town more accessible and comfortable for visitors.
One of the biggest milestones in Kodaikanal's history was the creation of Kodai Lake in 1863 by Sir Vere Henry Levinge, who served as the Collector of Madurai. The star-shaped lake soon became the heart of the hill station and remains its most famous attraction even today. Over the years, Kodaikanal grew into an important educational and tourist destination. Many renowned schools and institutions were established here because of its pleasant weather. Even after India's independence, the town continued to attract travellers from across the country. Today, Kodaikanal beautifully blends its colonial heritage with natural beauty, offering visitors a peaceful escape while preserving its historical charm and cultural significance.
