📜 History
Haflong is the only hill station in Assam and has a long history that is closely connected with the Dimasa Kingdom. In earlier times, this region was ruled by the Dimasa kings, who were one of the oldest tribal communities in Northeast India. They played an important role in shaping the culture and traditions of the area. Even today, many Dimasa customs, festivals, and historical sites remind visitors of their rich heritage. During the British period, Haflong gradually developed into an administrative centre because of its pleasant weather and strategic location in the hills. The British improved road connectivity and later introduced the railway line through the surrounding mountains, making travel easier. Over time, the town became an important stop for traders, government officials, and travellers visiting the hill region.
After India's independence, Haflong continued to grow as the headquarters of the former North Cachar Hills district, which is now known as Dima Hasao district. Although the town has modern facilities today, it has successfully preserved its tribal identity and natural beauty. People from different communities such as the Dimasa, Zeme Naga, Hmar, Kuki, Karbi, and others live together peacefully, making Haflong a fine example of cultural diversity. Today, Haflong is not just known for its scenic hills and lakes but also for its rich history, tribal heritage, and unique cultural traditions that have been passed down through generations.
