📜 History
Gulmarg has a long and interesting history that goes back several centuries. In ancient times, this beautiful valley was known as **Gaurimarg**, which means "the path of Goddess Gauri." According to local beliefs, Goddess Parvati is said to have spent time in this region, making it a place of religious importance for many people. During the 16th century, Sultan Yusuf Shah Chak of Kashmir was deeply impressed by the beauty of the valley. He renamed it **Gulmarg**, which means "Meadow of Flowers." The name perfectly describes the place, as the meadows bloom with colourful wildflowers during the summer season.
In the British era, Gulmarg became a popular summer retreat for British officers and their families who wanted to escape the heat of the plains. They introduced activities like golf, horse riding, and hunting. The famous Gulmarg Golf Course, which is among the highest golf courses in the world, was also developed during this period. After India's independence, Gulmarg slowly emerged as one of the country's most popular tourist destinations. With the construction of the Gulmarg Gondola—one of the highest cable cars in the world—the town gained international recognition for skiing and winter sports. Today, Gulmarg attracts visitors throughout the year, not only for its breathtaking natural beauty but also for its rich history, cultural heritage, and adventure activities that make it one of Kashmir's most loved hill destinations.
