📜 History

The history of Gajanan Maharaj Temple is closely connected with the life of Saint Gajanan Maharaj, one of Maharashtra's most respected spiritual saints. According to devotees, Gajanan Maharaj first appeared in Shegaon on 23 February 1878. He was found sitting near a place where leftover food had been thrown after a community meal. People initially thought he was an ordinary ascetic, but his calm nature, deep spiritual knowledge, and many miraculous incidents soon attracted attention. During his stay in Shegaon, Maharaj guided people towards simple living, devotion to God, kindness, and selfless service. Many followers believed that he performed miracles such as curing illnesses, helping people during difficult times, and blessing devotees with peace and prosperity. However, Maharaj always encouraged faith, humility, and good deeds rather than focusing on miracles. After spending nearly 32 years in Shegaon, Gajanan Maharaj took Samadhi on 8 September 1910. Soon after, his devotees built a shrine at the place of his Samadhi. Over the years, this shrine developed into the famous Gajanan Maharaj Temple, which is now managed by the Shri Gajanan Maharaj Sansthan. Today, millions of devotees from across India visit the temple every year to seek blessings and experience the peaceful atmosphere that reflects Maharaj's teachings of faith, compassion, and service.
