📜 History
Dudhsagar Falls has been a part of the Western Ghats for centuries and is one of the oldest natural attractions in Goa. Although there is no exact historical record about when people first discovered the waterfall, it has been known to local communities for hundreds of years. During the Portuguese rule in Goa (1510–1961), the area around Dudhsagar remained largely untouched because of its dense forests and difficult terrain. The waterfall later became well known when the railway line connecting Goa and Karnataka was built through the Western Ghats during the late 19th century. The railway bridge crossing in front of the falls soon became one of the most photographed locations in India.
A popular local legend is also associated with Dudhsagar Falls. It is said that a princess used to bathe in a nearby lake every day. After bathing, she would drink milk from a golden jug. One day, when she noticed a prince approaching, she quickly poured the milk down the hillside to cover herself. According to the legend, the flowing milk gave the waterfall its name, "Dudhsagar," which means "Sea of Milk." Over the years, Dudhsagar Falls has become one of Goa's biggest tourist attractions. Despite the growing number of visitors, the surrounding forest remains protected as part of the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary, helping preserve the area's natural beauty and wildlife for future generations.
