📜 History
Digha, one of West Bengal's most loved beach destinations, has an interesting past that dates back several centuries. Earlier, this coastal village was known as Beerkul (Birkul) and remained a quiet fishing settlement on the shores of the Bay of Bengal. During the late 18th century, British traveler Warren Hastings is believed to have appreciated the beauty of this place, but it remained largely unknown for many years.
The real development of Digha began after India's independence. In the late 1940s, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, the then Chief Minister of West Bengal, visited the area and saw its potential as a seaside tourist destination. His efforts played a major role in transforming the small village into a well-planned beach town. Roads, hotels, gardens, and other tourist facilities were gradually developed, making Digha more accessible to visitors.
Over the years, Digha has become one of the most popular weekend getaways for people from Kolkata and nearby states. While modern attractions have been added with time, the town still retains the charm of its peaceful coastline and traditional fishing culture. Today, Digha is known not only for its beautiful beaches but also for its historical significance as one of the earliest planned beach resorts in eastern India.
