Daringbadi
Daringbadi is a beautiful hill station located in Kandhamal district of Odisha, India. Popularly known as the "Kashmir of Odisha," it is famous for its cool climate, pine forests, coffee plantations, waterfalls, and scenic valleys. Situated at an elevation of about 915 meters above sea level, Daringbadi is one of the few places in Odisha where frost can be seen during winter. The destination offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, tribal culture, and peaceful surroundings, making it an ideal getaway for nature lovers, photographers, and adventure enthusiasts
The town derives its name from a British officer named Daring Sahib. Today, it has become one of Odisha's most popular eco-tourism destinations. Visitors can explore attractions such as Hill View Park, Silent Valley, Lovers Point, Nature Park, Coffee Gardens, Midubanda Waterfall, Emu Farm, and Doluri River. The sunrise and sunset views from the hilltops are especially breathtaking.
Daringbadi is also known for its tribal heritage. Several indigenous communities live in the region and contribute to its unique cultural identity. Local markets offer traditional handicrafts, spices, turmeric, honey, and organic coffee products.
Winter is the most attractive season, with temperatures occasionally dropping close to freezing levels. Visitors can witness morning frost, a rare phenomenon in eastern India. Adventure seekers enjoy trekking through pine forests, nature walks, birdwatching, photography, and camping.
The hill station is well connected by road from Berhampur, Bhubaneswar, and Phulbani. Its serene environment, pollution-free atmosphere, and natural beauty make it an ideal destination for family vacations, honeymoon trips, and weekend retreats. A stay of 2–3 days is generally sufficient to explore the major attractions of Daringbadi and its surrounding areas.
📜 History
Daringbadi, a picturesque hill station in Odisha's Kandhamal district, has an interesting history that dates back to the British colonial period. The town derives its name from a British officer known locally as Daring Saheb (also spelled Dering Saheb), who served in the region during British rule. The word 'Badi' means village in the local language, so the name "Daringbadi" literally translates to "Daring's Village."
Before the arrival of the British, the area was inhabited mainly by indigenous tribal communities, especially the Kandha (Kondh) tribe, who lived in harmony with the surrounding forests and hills. Their traditions, agriculture, and cultural practices continue to play an important role in the identity of Daringbadi even today.
During the British era, the pleasant climate and dense forests attracted administrators who recognized the area's potential as a hill retreat. Roads and basic infrastructure gradually developed, making the region more accessible. After India's independence, Daringbadi remained a quiet tribal settlement for many years before gaining recognition as a tourist destination. Its cool weather, pine forests, coffee plantations, waterfalls, and occasional winter frost earned it the nickname "Kashmir of Odisha."
Today, Daringbadi is one of Odisha's most popular hill stations. While tourism has brought better facilities and connectivity, the town has preserved its natural beauty, tribal heritage, and peaceful atmosphere, making it an ideal destination for nature lovers and cultural explorers alike.
