Chamundi Hills is a famous spiritual and scenic landmark overlooking the city of Mysuru. The hill is home to the ancient Chamundeshwari Temple and offers panoramic views of Mysore palace, lakes, and urban landscape. Named after Goddess Chamundeshwari, it attracts devotees, tourists, and nature lovers. The winding road and 1,000-step staircase make the journey memorable. It is one of Karnataka’s most visited heritage and pilgrimage destinations.
The journey to the top is as memorable as the destination itself. Visitors can either drive through a winding motorable road or climb the historic 1,000 steps carved into the hillside. Along the way, small shrines and resting points provide spiritual and physical refreshment. Midway, the gigantic monolithic statue of Nandi, Lord Shiva’s sacred bull, stands as a symbol of devotion and craftsmanship, attracting photographers and pilgrims alike.
From the summit, visitors are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of Mysuru city, including the grand Mysore Palace, Karanji Lake, and the sprawling urban landscape. Sunrise and sunset are particularly magical, casting golden hues over the city below.

Whether you are a devotee, a nature lover, or a photography enthusiast, Chamundi Hills offers an unforgettable experience that captures the essence of Karnataka’s heritage and spirituality.
📜 History
Chamundi Hills is one of the oldest and most respected pilgrimage sites in Karnataka. The hill gets its name from Goddess Chamundeshwari, who is believed to have defeated the demon Mahishasura at this very place. According to Hindu mythology, Mahishasura was a powerful demon king who ruled the ancient city of Mahishuru, which later became Mysuru. After a fierce battle, Goddess Chamundeshwari killed him, and since then she has been worshipped as the protector of the region.
The Chamundeshwari Temple standing on the hill has a history of more than a thousand years. Although the temple has been renovated several times, many parts still reflect the traditional Dravidian style of architecture. During the rule of the Wadiyar kings of Mysore, the temple received royal support, and the rulers considered Goddess Chamundeshwari as their family deity. They regularly visited the temple to seek blessings before important ceremonies and festivals. Another important attraction on the hill is the giant Nandi statue, carved from a single granite rock during the 17th century. Visitors can also see the huge statue of Mahishasura holding a sword and a cobra, reminding people of the legend connected with the hill. Even today, Chamundi Hills remains an important religious and cultural landmark where thousands of devotees and tourists visit throughout the year to experience its history, spirituality, and beautiful surroundings.
