Auroville
Auroville is an international township founded in 1968 by Mirra Alfassa, inspired by the teachings of Sri Aurobindo. Located about 10 km from Puducherry, Auroville was created as a universal town where people from different countries, cultures, and backgrounds can live together in peace and harmony. Its most famous landmark is the Matrimandir, a golden spherical structure surrounded by beautiful gardens.
The most recognizable attraction in Auroville is the Matrimandir, a magnificent golden sphere situated at the center of the township. 📜 History
Auroville was founded on **28 February 1968** near Puducherry with a unique idea—to create a place where people from different countries, cultures, and religions could live together peacefully. The project was started by **Mirra Alfassa**, popularly known as *The Mother*, who was the spiritual collaborator of **Sri Aurobindo**. Her dream was to build a universal township where human unity would be more important than nationality, politics, or religion. The inauguration ceremony was attended by representatives from **124 countries and all Indian states**, who brought soil from their homeland and placed it together in a marble urn. This symbolic act represented the vision of unity among people across the world.
During its early years, the area was mostly dry land with very little vegetation. Thousands of volunteers and residents worked together to plant trees, conserve water, and improve the environment. Over the years, these efforts transformed the barren landscape into a green and peaceful community. One of the most significant milestones in Auroville's history was the construction of the **Matrimandir**, whose foundation was laid in 1971. After several years of work, it gradually became the spiritual centre of Auroville. In 1988, the Government of India passed the **Auroville Foundation Act**, giving the township legal recognition and ensuring its proper administration. Today, Auroville is home to people from many countries who continue to work towards sustainable living, education, environmental conservation, and the ideals of human unity envisioned by its founders.
