📜 History
Alappuzha (Alleppey) History
Alappuzha, popularly known as Alleppey, has a rich history that goes back several centuries. The town was established in 1762 by Raja Kesava Das, the Dewan (Prime Minister) of the former Kingdom of Travancore. He developed Alappuzha into a well-planned port town to strengthen trade and reduce dependence on nearby ports. Because of its strategic location along the Arabian Sea and its network of canals, the town soon became an important centre for the export of spices, coconut products, and coir.
During the 19th century, Alappuzha earned the nickname "Venice of the East" due to its beautiful canals and waterways. Boats were the main mode of transport, and the canals connected villages, markets, and trading centres across the region. The coir industry flourished during this period, making Alappuzha one of the world's leading producers and exporters of coir mats and ropes.
Under British influence, trade expanded further, and the town witnessed the construction of warehouses, markets, and administrative buildings. After India's Independence in 1947, Alappuzha gradually transformed from a busy trading port into one of Kerala's most popular tourist destinations. Today, while it is famous for its peaceful backwaters, houseboats, and beaches, the town continues to preserve its historical charm through its old canals, colonial-era structures, and traditional coir-making industry, reflecting a perfect blend of history, culture, and natural beauty.
