Hill StationAgumbe is a scenic hill station and rainforest region situated in the Western Ghats of Karnataka. Located at an elevation of approximately 825 meters above sea level, it is renowned for receiving some of the highest rainfall in South India and is popularly known as the "Cherrapunji of South India." The region is characterized by evergreen forests, misty mountains, waterfalls, and diverse flora and fauna.
One of Agumbe's biggest attractions is its spectacular sunset viewpoint, which offers panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and, on clear days, even the Arabian Sea horizon. The area is also famous for the Agumbe Rainforest Research Station, a globally recognized center for rainforest conservation and King Cobra research.
Adventure seekers can explore numerous trekking trails leading to waterfalls such as Barkana Falls, Onake Abbi Falls, and Jogi Gundi Falls. The monsoon season transforms the landscape into a lush green paradise with flowing streams and waterfalls, while winter offers pleasant weather and clear views.
Agumbe also holds cultural significance due to its association with the legendary television series Malgudi Days. Traditional Malnad-style houses, local cuisine, and serene village life add to its charm. Visitors can enjoy birdwatching, wildlife photography, trekking, nature walks, and exploring nearby temples and viewpoints. The region remains relatively less commercialized compared to other hill stations, making it ideal for travelers seeking tranquility and authentic natural experiences. Agumbe is truly one of Karnataka's most enchanting eco-tourism destinations.
