About Rameswaram Temple

Ramanathaswamy Temple is located on Rameswaram Island off the southeastern coast of Tamil Nadu. The temple is built in classic Dravidian style with towering gopurams (gateway towers), striking corridors — reputed to be among the longest temple corridors anywhere — and a sacred Jyotirlinga.
The key legend associated with this temple is that Lord Rama, on his return from Lanka after defeating the demon king Ravana, sought to absolve the sin of killing a Brahmin (Ravana was a Brahmin). Guided by sages, he installed a Shiva Lingam here and performed worship, giving the place its name Rameswaram (“Lord of Rama”).
The temple complex also contains 22 theerthams (holy wells) within its precincts where devotees traditionally take a sacred bath before entering the shrine — believed to purify the mind, body, and soul.
Architecturally, the temple features intricately carved stone pillars and massive halls, with contributions made by various dynasties over centuries. It is both a spiritual and cultural landmark that draws pilgrims and tourists from across India and the world.
